Five Things Inspiring Me Lately: March 2018
Alright guys, it's time for another installment of FTIML! This one features new things that have been inspiring me as of late, as well as a bit of a recap of some things that I've already covered. This week is a very special week for Premier Amour, and something special is coming at the end of it so please stay tuned so you can find out what it is. I will announce it here first on the blog and then on my other social media platforms. Excited? I know I am! Now let's get started:
1. Eat (A Lot), Drink (Not Much), And Be (Incredibly) Merry:
If you've read my last FTIML, you'll know I've been trying to change my eating habits for the better. So far I've lost 28 pounds, and I feel great! My main struggle is when I have events like birthdays and such and I struggle with the dilemma of "Should I have a cheat day today? But I've been doing so well. Should I spoil this streak?" But I have found that cheat days, once in a while, are essential for me because it gets me out of this mentality of "I can't have it, so I reaaaaalllly need it" and that causes me to binge. Last week, I thought I could treat myself since I've been doing so well and since I got off early from work, I decided to sample some goodies from the Food and Wine Festival at Disney's California Adventure. I might have overdone it just a bit, but it was worth waiting for this cheat day and lucky for me, everything was served in small portions. So let's go through what I sampled:
First up: The Jalapeño Popper Mac 'n' Cheese, 10/10. It was delicious and not spicy at all (in a good way). Don't miss out on this yummy treat! Also not pictured: Watermelon Lemonade with a Tajin rim, 8/10 which was very refreshing and very much needed while trying the food, but I wished more of the watermelon flavor peeked through. Still very good!
Next: The Watsonville Strawberry Pie, 7/10. I have the biggest sweet tooth so I won't give this guy less than a 7, and the strawberries were big and incredibly fresh, but it's okay compared to the next item I got:
Next: The Meyer Lemon Macaron, 11/10. I absolutely love macarons, and I almost didn't try this one, but I am so glad I did. The shell is perfectly light and crunchy, and the lemon buttercream and blueberry jam filling both complement each other nicely. Oh, and it's huge! I will definitely be going back for this one.
Next: The Grilled Harris Ranch Beef Tenderloin Slider, 10/10. The ONLY thing I didn't like about this guy is that it is kind of tiny, but other than that, it is AMAZING! The meat is cooked to a medium rare, which was different that how I usually get my meat, but still so juicy and soft, and the chimichurri and red onions bump up the flavor factor to 100%. Don't sleep on this one guys!
And at the last booth: The Black Garlic and Soy-braised Pork Belly Banh Mi and The Creamy Mac 'n' Cheese, both 7/10. These were very good, but I liked the pork belly skewers from Bengal Barbeque a bit better, and the Mac 'n' Cheese was very creamy and yummy, but I liked the French Onion Mac from last year better, oh and the Popper Mac too.
Everything I tried from the festival was absolutely scrumptious and did not disappoint. So if you find yourself in Anaheim anytime soon, go visit the Food and Wine Festival. This had inspired to recreate these dishes into a healthier version. If you do try them, what was your favorite? Let me know!
2. "You're So Art Deco":
Speaking of DCA, have you guys ever really looked at Buena Vista Street? All the architecture, window displays, and props throughout the stores? I am in love with all of it and I was inspired and I started thinking about what my future home could look like. If you want to read more about it, check out Dream House! A(n Imaginary) Tour.
3. (Wonder) Conned:
This last Sunday, I attended my very second WonderCon, and I loved every second of it. I love how everyone can come together and celebrate their favorite characters, whether through cosplay or art. I'm inspired to dress up next year, or who knows, maybe even have my own booth? Check out (Wonder)Con Artist: WonderCon 2018 & Merch to read more about my Con adventures and haul.
I've been meaning to make this into a sweater, and I finally found somewhere to wear it!
4. The Princess Without A Voice:
Okay, so I know I should have seen The Shape Of Water when it came out months ago, but I got lazy and never did. I saw it the day before the Oscars, and my yearly tradition is to watch an Oscar winner before the actual show (the movie usually wins an Oscar for something, and so far, all the movies I've watched have been winners.) It's the latest movie from my fellow paisano Guillermo Del Toro, so of course, I had to watch it. I have yet to see the rest of his movies, including Pan's Labyrinth, but Crimson Peak is one of my favorite movies ever, so I had to see how this one compares to it. Both Crimson Peak and The Shape of Water are like adult fairy tales, with complex characters and adult themes, but both are beautifully told. and just, well, beautiful.
WonderCon cosplay maybe?
A deep and intense stare
This is without a doubt an adult fairy tale, but the themes in this film are very important and should be taken in. It reminds me a bit of Disney's Beauty and the Beast and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, where the monster isn't who you think it is, and we should not be afraid of the "other", as Guillermo says. We should not be afraid of those who are different than us, and try to keep an open mind about people and things that are strange and unfamiliar to us. This film is profoundly meaningful to me, as it reminds me of the struggles us as immigrants have had and how hard it can be to be accepted by a country that's so different yet, what I have found is that all people have the same emotions and dreams of making a better life for their families and themselves. So please, if you haven't watched The Shape of Water yet, please do so and carry on the life lessons that this beautiful film has demonstrated.
